The amount of Pokémon Sun and Moon Streams on Twitch and YouTube is incredible. I am so happy for the Pokémon-Franchise. After the huge success of Pokémon Go, that sadly has been rapidly decreasing since summer, due to a lack of updates, it is good to see, that the new features implemented in the main series are well received. Pokémon Sun and Moon are the most pre-ordered Nintendo games so far.
The 12 hour time difference in the Moon-Version for example or switching the classic Gym-System for the Island Trial Challenge brings new flow into the game.
But it weren’t only these changes that are responsible for the huge succes of Pokémon Sun/Moon. I, too, was ‘victim’ to this emotion: Nostalgia.
Nintendo’s Marketing department hit right in the bull’s eye with their strategy. First there was Pokémon Go, that got so much attention from the media and general public, that even my parents talked about it. With this starting ground there was no stopping the hype train. The videos, both small teasers and huge reveals about the new Pokémon-Editions got everyone excited.
But they specifically targeted our generation (ironically it is also my 20th anniversary this year). With the renewel of the first-gen Pokémon, they initiated our nostalgia.
To sum it up: I bought my 3DS this summer just for Pokémon (of course I am going to get my fix of other nostalgia, as well) and I am happy with my decision, because Nintendo did a good job.
I think we can all admit that Nintendo is sitting on the biggest treasure of nostalgia, as we all grew up with their fantastic games. The NES Mini has also proven to be a huge success and this could mean that we will see more of this. I am looking forward to seeing what Nintendo has ‘in store’ for us next year (Pun not intended)
Anyway, I have to go and do drugs aka playing Pokémon for 10 hours until the sun comes up.
